There are a number of groups that provide assistance to the area’s migrant workers. For the most part these are faith-based groups that work informally in their local communities, usually on a volunteer basis. Supports include:
- Securing basic needs;
- Accompanying individuals on errands such as opening a bank account or going to doctor’s appointments;
- Social and recreational activities;
- Religious and spiritual services;
- Health and safety training.
Welcome Booklet for Migrant Workers
Collaboration between community partners has led to the creation of a welcome booklet for migrant workers in Lambton County. The booklet includes information on:
- Employment contracts, rights and benefits;
- Health and safety;
- Spiritual and social activities;
- Emergency contact numbers;
- Opening a bank account and sending a letter;
- Fire and bike safety.
The booklet also contains a section on accessing services in the following communities in Lambton County: Arkona, Bright’s Grove, Forest, Sombra, Thedford, Watford. The services highlighted are:
- Grocery stores
- Banks
- Walk-in clinics and community health centres
- Post offices
- Laundromats
- Libraries and public internet access
- Thrift stores
- Food banks
- Recreation centres
