To be eligible for the Community Connection program, you must:

• Be a permanent resident of Canada, or Convention Refugee, or be a person in Canada whose application for Permanent Resident status is being processed in Canada and who has been informed by a letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada of the initial approval of your application subject to an admissibility assessment (this means you have approval-in-principle);

Community Connections

This program is offered in both French and English and creates community links for newcomers to Canada. Canadian families are matched with a newcomer family providing opportunities for cross cultural interaction, language practice and career development.

Community Connections focuses its efforts on newcomers and their families to assist them with the many aspects of community integration.

• Practice and improve your conversational English
• Learn about Canadian culture
• Make contacts through organized group activities
• Explore educational, recreational, vocational and career goals with supports & referrals

Job Search Workshop

The Job Search Workshops(JSW) program offers pre-employment training to newcomers across Ontario and assist them in gaining knowledge and skills to better understand strategies, business perspectives, and next steps relating to the job search process.

To be eligible for the Job Search Workshop you must

• Complete an employment assessment
• Have an English benchmark above 5/6
• Be a permanent resident, convention refugee or live-in-caregiver

Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)

The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) initiative provides assistance for newcomer children and parents in elementary and secondary schools in Sarnia-Lambton. SWIS connects newly arrived families to services and resources in the school and the community in order to promote settlement and foster student achievement.

Newcomer Settlement Program

The Newcomers´ Settlement Program assists newcomers who are settling and adjusting and to life in Canada and Sarnia-Lambton. This program is designed to help newcomers fully engage in all aspects of Canadian life, social, economic, political and cultural, and to maximize the benefits of their participation and contribution to the Canadian society.

Services include assistance in:

• Settling in your community
• Ftoinding housing ,a job or childcare service
• Registering your children in school
• Accessing other programs such as English or French language programs, employment services, skills training and foreign credential assessment
• Getting information about provincial or federal government services such as healthcare and social services
• Filling out forms and applications to access government programs and services
• Accessing interpretation services or have documents translated.
