To fully enjoy and succeed in Sarnia-Lambton, whether at school, work or socializing, you will need to improve your English language skills. The YMCAs Across Southwestern Ontario offers English as a Second Language (ESL) and Language Instructions for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) in the area of Sarnia-Lambton.
Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are all taught by certified instructors. To register, bring your citizenship document, immigration document, health card and social insurance number, or passport.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are designed to improve your ability to read write and speak English. Learning to speak English fluently will make it easier to further your education, work in your profession and take care of daily activities such as banking, shopping or visiting a doctor. ESL classes also provide insight into Canadian cultural values, customs and social expectations. ESL programming is funded for both Canadian-born and foreign-born residents.

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)
The Government of Canada, in cooperation with the Ontario government, and the YMCAs Across Southwestern Ontario offers free language training in Sarnia-Lambton to adult permanent residents. The LINC program provides basic language skills. LINC can also assess your current language and advise you on a program that best fits your educational and/or career goals.
To be eligible for the LINC program in Ontario, you must:
- Be a permanent resident of Canada, or Convention Refugee, or be a person in Canada whose application for Permanent Resident status is being processed in Canada and who has been informed by a letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada of the initial approval of your application subject to an admissibility assessment (this means you have approval-in-principle);
- Be at least 18 years old
- Take a language assessment test at a CLARS Assessment Centre, to determine which level is right for you.
You are not eligible for the LINC program if you are a:
- Canadian citizen
- Refugee claimant
- Temporary resident (such as foreign student, foreign worker or visitor)
